Benefits of Student Membership
The Cooper Ornithological Society offers several levels of membership, providing different benefits in the form of journal subscriptions, and grant and award eligibility.

Student-officer mixerhosted by the officers and board members of the society at the annual meeting. This reception, at which drinks and light refreshments are provided, offers an opportunity for students to meet with the society's leaders and discuss research findings, opportunities for graduate and post graduate studies, job possibilities and other matters of mutual interest.
Travel awards are available to students presenting research at the annual meeting.
Student Presentation Awards. The Cooper Ornithological Society presents four awards: the A. Brazier Howell Award, The Frances F. Roberts Award, and two Board of Directors Awards for papers or posters presented by students at our annual meeting. Each of these includes a cash award, membership in the Cooper Society, and a book on some ornithological topic.
The Mewaldt-King Student Research Awards presented at the COS annual meeting. Cash awards of $1000 are designated, in the memory of L. Richard Mewaldt and James R. King, to support research that relates to the conservation of birds. Joseph Grinnell Student Research Awards are presented to support beginning research of new Ph.D. graduate students. Cash awards of $1000 awards are designated, in the memory of Joseph Grinnell, to support basic research in any aspect of avian biology.
Free copies of articles from over 100 hard-to-locate ornithological journals.
The small meeting atmosphere at our annual meeting provides opportunities for students to sit down with senior members of the ornithological community and discuss topics of mutual interest such as graduate study, employment, and research opportunities.
Free ticket for the annual meeting banquet for those students making paper or poster presentations at the meeting.
Free two-year membership awards for qualifying students. The Cooper Ornithological Society is always interested in getting more graduate students involved and provides free student memberships each year. These student awards cover costs of membership for 2 years and carry full membership benefits, providing an important launch into ornithological careers at an early stage. To apply, simply send a CV of the student and a cover letter from the major professor that describes why the student deserves the award. Deadline for receipt of applications is 15 Mar 2005.
